Simple recipes and tasty tidbits. Rooted in the Heartland. Healthy, with a sweet tooth.
Welcome, and a little context.
Welcome to Midwestern Expat Eats by me, a native Midwesterner who misses the simple, hearty foods I grew up with.
This is a free newsletter for ordinary, busy people who enjoy good home-cooked meals but don't want to spend all day in the kitchen. For us, when we're not following a strict diet, just trying to use moderation. And for when we want a bit of nostalgia.
Here's what you can expect to see every fortnight:
Down-home cooking - recipes with simple, affordable ingredients. Meals that are healthy, but still allow for dessert. Midwestern Expat Eats is rooted in the humble, hearty traditions of the American Midwest with its heritage of North European influences.
Fun news about Midwestern classics both old and new. I'm a history buff so get ready for a few obscure references now and then.
What you won't find:
Hard-to-find ingredients.
(Many) vegan keto recipes.
Crazy made-up foods (you know the kind where someone took two normal things and combined them into something original, but also kinda gross?).
Really great photography. There's a reason we're on email and not Instagram.
Celebrity / influencer news. I love my share of cooking YouTube and tv, but I'll try to steer this newsletter in a non-celebrity-centric direction. I figure the major influencers are easy enough for you to find on your own :)
This is meant to be a positive, hopeful corner of inspiration. Every story will feature good food, kind people, or both. There are many problems with food: agricultural practices, distribution networks, media coverage, and consumption patterns all have issues with injustice, inequality, inefficiency, and more. I'm learning about them and you should too. This is not that kind of learning resource.
This newsletter will probably fall short - even in its limited scope. I don't know all the pockets of Midwestern cuisine. I don't even live in the Midwest at the moment. Any good media diet includes a variety of diverse cuisines and unique writers. I'll just be happy if I'm one of your regular reads.
Sign up now so you don’t miss the first issue - coming March 3, 2021!!
In the meantime, tell your friends!
